How the #SASearch is Just Like Dating

"So while you brush up your resume and cover letter, maybe you should also watch some romantic comedies while you're at it."

I was hanging out with some of my fellow graduate school friends the other day while I was back around Rutgers. We were talking about the job search we went through and how other folks are about to go through it which reminded me of a great metaphor I kept sharing with my cohort while we were all trudging through applications and interviews. It is how the student affairs job search process is a lot like dating when you think about it.

From the very first stages of perusing job postings to the campus interviews, it is the same process that one goes through for dating. I'll go through this chronologically how either of these situations would typically happen, and you can immediately see what I'm talking about.

So when you decide you're ready for something new, you figure you'll go see what's out there and who is looking for somebody. You have your standards that you aren't willing to negotiate and maybe some that you are. You might try to send some signals at the beginning to get their attention, and then you'll lay out who you are with some zing and zest. You both hit it off and you start leaving little notes and treats for each other. They might ask to see you again, you start meeting people they know, and it feels like it's all getting to be pretty serious. They eventually invite you over to see their place, you see where they live, and you can really feel like this is a match. You can really see yourself here together. They ask you to move in and then it's happily ever after. Well, until you see how they really are, and after a few years you might be ready to move onto the next one.

So while you brush up your resume and cover letter, maybe you should also watch some romantic comedies while you're at it.

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 01/09/15

Geek-and-proud

Hey there! Here is what's going on in my world!

I've been using this new way to manage your Gmail for about a week now and I love it. It helps simplify my messages and get my email out of my way. The ways it compiles common emails and messages of the same type as well as allows for easily snoozing, pinning, and archiving messages. You have to get invited (I can invite you!) or request access from Google (which takes some time) but it is definitely worth it. There is a free app for iPhone and Android, and you can also access it via the Chrome web browser. I definitely recommend you check it out if you love Gmail!

I just finished this mini-series on Amazon Prime, where it is available to stream alongside many other HBO series. The story surrounds Easy Company and their journey in Europe during World War II. It came out over a decade ago but still holds up well. The series spans over two years worth of time in the matter of ten episodes so the story does sacrifice character development and some nuance for this fast pace, but the emotion and action are still definitely there. This is a great series for any American history fans like myself, and you'll even see a lot of familiar faces before they became major celebrities, which is fun.

  • Perspective

"Follow the trend lines, not the headlines." I saw this quote recently in an article and it resonated with me. Too often we get caught up in the little things right in front of our face we forget to look at the big picture. The world is getting better and safer all the time, but people don't see or can't realize the incremental change and improvements that are happening. Change takes time and with marriage equality now available to the majority of Americans, I know this is true. I lived to see this happen over the course of my short lifetime, so I know we can make a difference if we all rally together. The aforementioned article does a great way of explaining this point of view, and it's a perspective like this that helps me stay positive and motivated to keep working hard.

2014 Year in Review: My First Full Year

Red_sunset

"...you make time for what you want to make time for."

Now that the sun has finally set on 2014, it is due time to look back on the first full calendar year of the blog (!) and see where we have come. It has been a big year compared to 2013, especially since I've been willing and able to blog far more regularly now. I had almost 700 views in the fraction of 2013 I was blogging, and 2014 garnered almost 8,000 views which is a hugely awesome jump for the site which I am very grateful for.

In terms of posts, I kept regular with movie reviews, geek outs, and other random things for 2014. I had 177 posts over the year, which I hope to maintain at least that level of writing. I look forward to continuing creating a large library of posts to keep sharing out as "throwbacks", since this helps promote everything and gives me some breathing room on the weeks I'm light on new content (I highly recommend folks do this!).

Some reflections on the whole process though, it is definitely hard to write on those days when you're tired, creatively drained, or just busy and physically can't sit down to blog. I like to always say that you make time for what you want to make time for. I want to make time for this so I make the time in my life, even when it is a late night or weekend when I should just be lounging around or not working. I enjoy writing for this blog so it doesn't feel too taxing on me to do most of the time. My main takeaway for blogging this year is that you have to force it a bit until it becomes more habitual. The dedication and investment will pay off. I feel very happy and satisfied with the milestones I hit this first full year. It can be hard too when I feel like I should be doing more or worrying why more people aren't following or liking or commenting. It will take time and a huge part of success is just perseverance. I know that if I keep up with it, it will only go up from here in terms of achieving the goals I set for myself.

In terms of what is coming next for the blog, I hope to continue to promote the site regularly and get some guest posts from some cool geeks and nerds (if you're interested, please reach out!). I enjoy podcasting and it would be cool to do one for the site but I would want to build a bigger audience on the site first before I do a podcast or videos. I hope to read more books and do reviews for the site more often, since I feel like there is so much I want to get to and share.

Thank you to everyone that visited the site, liked, commented, shared, and found something fun and/or useful in what I posted. I look forward to continuing to serve up awesomely geeky stuff for you all!

All the best and Happy New Year!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 12/19/14

Geek-and-proud

Hey there! Here is what's going on in my world!

I watched this movie with my partner the other night and it was a heck of an emotional ride. I haven't read the book so I don't know how it is different or the same, but I found the movie to be a great depiction of love, loss, and the importance of opening ourselves up to the world versus closing ourselves off to avoid being hurt. The whole film just feels well done and is just the right amount of everything for anyone, so whoever you watch it with, they should like it. I haven't read any of John Green's work but I'd be intrigued to watch the movie of his next book, Paper Towns.

I've been following this story through all of the entertainment sites I follow, mostly out of curiosity as to how it will be handled. I'm not really interested in seeing the film but just on principle, it is intriguing to see how Sony handles the hack, the threats, and the media firestorm over it all. Recently Sony cancelled the worldwide release of The Interview, stating they have no plans at this time to release the film in the near future in any form. I can understand why they made that decision based on the possibility of something bad happening and limiting your liabilities, but the vague threats from the group and no real idea of what they're capable of, it seemed like a flinch on the part of Sony to give this group called The Guardians of Peace, what they want. I'm not too choked up about it, but it is an intriguing story to follow and I'm sure it's not over yet.

  • Finality, Conclusions, and Closure

The year is coming to a close, and I've reflected on the past year and will soon look ahead at 2015 (blog post to come). What I like about this time of year is wrapping things up (pun intended) and finishing things. You can let go of things that held you back, get rid of things you no longer need, and move on less burdened. It's something that is more intuitive for me than it may be for others, but I definitely encourage you to finish those things on your to do list you've been waiting to do, let off some of that nagging weight, and march onward with less. Minimalism is where it's at!

* PS: This will be the last geek out post for the year, and I'll be back the first full week of January (post will be up on Jan. 9). Next Monday's movie review will be the last until that same week as well. Taking a short holiday break from bloggy stuff and coming back strong in 2015!
