Why it is Suddenly Cool to be a Geek

December 09, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Nerdy Stuff, Sponsored

I’m sure the majority of you didn’t even raise an eyebrow at that title, because you all know exactly what I mean. The recent influx of Marvel and DC films over the last few years, and their mainstream popularity amongst those who either weren’t interested in the comic books or hadn’t heard of them until now, shows just how popular it’s become to be a geek. This is no bad thing, of course, but it’s a very peculiar U-Turn considering that to be a geek used to be something for which kids were bullied at school. Now kids are probably bullied if they’re not into the latest superhero franchise… Well, it’s probably not that bad, but it’s still an interesting phenomenon.

It’s sociable to be a geek.

I, for one, welcome this new horizon in terms of being ‘cool’. People are welcoming the idea that it’s a good thing to be really passionate and interested in any topic, whether the subject involves a fictional story or even a pastime, which might be a slightly odd and unique niche. It really brings people together when they have a common interest, and I think that’s been the key to changing the idea of geeks as lonely, unsociable weirdos into the idea that, actually, to be geeky is to be part of a community of like-minded people with a similar, exciting interest. It’s boring not to be geeky, because it means you don’t have some hardcore obsession or interest.

We live in the technological age.

Maybe in the 80s it wasn’t cool to spend all your time on a computer, but now that the internet rules our entire social lives, rather than just affording us the ability to play games or simply use ‘boring’ office programs, it’s cool to like all things technological. Geeks are now our innovators, meaning that people aren’t as turned-off by the idea of a computer scientist, because it’s seen as a symbol of creativity in terms of pushing the limits of technology, or web design. Just make sure you’re creating the next Instagram, and you should be able to keep people’s interest.

The geek epidemic infected the world silently.

Those same popular kids, or disgruntled adults who rolled their eyes and dismissed technology 10 years ago have been caught up in the exact same storm as everyone else with the recent influx of new devices promising to connect us more than ever.

Then you have incredible conventions, such as Con Junkies, which have turned the experience of comic books and other fictional media into an interactive, community-based experience. It’s cool to like comics now, because they’ve been turned into Hollywood hits with popular actors. Again, this is a good thing. It’s brought people together.

There’s a common theme throughout all the reasons for geekiness becoming cool, and it comes down to socializing. To be a nerd or a geek was once seen as weird, because popularity depends on social interaction, connectivity and ‘sharing’ what’s cool with your friends. The things which have always been popular are still popular, but now people communicate through means which they once mocked. Films and the internet have given geeky interests new life. Perhaps there is no divide anymore.

Weekly Geek Outs - 08/26/16

August 26, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what is on my mind this week:

  • Cloverfield

I caught this movie recently via Hulu after really enjoying 10 Cloverfield Lane. I never saw it when it came out back in 2008, but after seeing it now, I don't feel like I missed much. I really appreciate how they did some unique franchise building with 10 Cloverfield Lane, and it had to start somewhere, but the original movie just felt frustrating throughout. The found footage still was a neat stylistic novelty but it always creates more plot holes than it is worth I feel like. Witnessing an alien invasion from the ground is pretty cool, but it only carries the movie so much. The characters were mostly annoying and the driving force of the movie just felt silly.

  • Strengths Finder

I took this assessment again the other day for work, and was pleased to see that most of my Strengths were the same from the last time I took it three years ago. Before, they were Ideation, Connectedness, Intellection, Input, and Adaptability. Now, there are Intellection, Input, Connectedness, Learner, and Responsibility. I love Strengths as a mindset and a way to approach teams and our roles in the world. We all have something valuable to offer, and we shouldn't feel like we all need to fit into the same mold. When we all bring our unique gifts to the table, we all win and we can do many more amazing things together.

  • Not Safe with Nikki Glaser

My partner and I have been keeping up with this show on Hulu lately, and we love it. This show finally gives comedian Nikki Glaser a platform that works for her. The show revolves around exploring sexuality with a genuine, comedic curiosity. She's always been awesome on @midnight, and after some other ventures, this seems to be something that works for her. She gets to do some awesome recurring segments like Tinder Tap Out, and gets to have an avenue to talk about important topics like the gender pay gap, sexual assault, and more. I highly recommend checking it out!

Weekly Geek Outs - 08/19/16

August 19, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what is going on in my world this week:

  • Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition

Long story short, they got me. I bought this extended cut of the movie on Blu-Ray. Not worth it, does not make this complicated movie any better (see my review for more detailed thoughts). This movie is overstuffed as it is, and the scenes cut help weave some minor plot points together better, but the movie is still not great. Wonder Woman is still awesome though and should have been in the movie more.

  • Capital Area Food Bank

I'm going to volunteer here with my partner with the great Day of Service Paid Time Off benefit I have with my job. They recently implemented this initiative and I'm excited to take advantage of it. I have more days to use and I look forward to building a relationship with this great community organization.

  • Thought

I've said this a few times in conversation recently, and thought I'd share it with you: I didn't even know my job and the company I work for now existed when I started job searching last year. Now that I'm here, I couldn't be more grateful I stumbled upon this company and this job. My thought and advice for those worried about figuring out what is next for them or what to do with their lives; it may just be out there waiting for you to discover it. Or it may not even exist yet, either way, you just need to be patient, do good work, and put yourself out there. Luck happens more often to those that are prepared for it.

Weekly Geek Outs - 07/22/16

July 22, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what is going on in my world this week:

  • Orange is the New Black, Season 4

I finished this most recent season this past week, and while I'm late to the party, I have a lot of feelings. The death of a beloved character, combined with some hard to watch moments left me a little frustrated, along with the continuing lack of development of most of its chronically underused and brilliant ensemble. What was at first a bold move for a TV show, has now become a burdensome weight; this large cast of diverse women characters now begs to be explored, but there is a main narrative to follow to drive the show forward. Also, with three more seasons already greenlit, we know we're going to have roughly 39 more hours of this show to get through. The narrative seems to be moving at a snail's pace for me while also suffering from the weight of everything else I mentioned. I enjoy this show, and feel it has so much potential (especially with how the season ended). I'll be curious to see how it goes, but if it doesn't improve, it is bordering on The Walking Dead territory for me (meaning it is really just not doing it for me anymore, may put my watching of it on pause). It definitely has time to change course. I just think it needs to figure out an endgame, focus more on other characters, and try better to balance the darker aspects of the show.

  • Ghostbusters

I saw the new Ghostbusters movie with my partner over this past weekend and I really enjoyed it. I made sure to watch the original film before seeing this one, and I feel like I prefer the newer one. Not to say the original 1984 film is bad, but it is definitely showing its age and just hits on a different target than the new reboot. The new film is funnier, the action is better, and the effects are better thanks to improved CGI (can't really hold that against its predecessor). The original Ghostbusters will always be there, but this new, female driven movie will hopefully embark on its own journey and create some positive new role models for young women going forward. Go check it out!

  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

This show is awesome. It is quick, smart, silly, and a really original format for TV (musical comedy). It wasn't something I thought I'd like at first, but after watching through the first season on Netflix recently, I'm a fan. It has some clever feminist lines and great running gags that you have to keep an eye out for. I'd recommend this show to most people. I'm sure it is not for everyone but this sort of show is right up my alley. My partner loved it too and it was a lot of fun to watch together. It is also an hour long each episode, which is surprising for a comedy but it helps to fit a lot into the season's 18 episodes especially with the musical interludes.

Weekly Geek Outs - 05/06/16

May 06, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what I'm geeking out about this week:

  • DC Animated Shows

I recently saved this article that highlights some great Batman & Superman episodes from their own respective animated series as well as the Justice League animated series. I hadn't really watched any of these series growing up. I was more into the Spider-Man and X-Men animated series of the '90s and other random shows of my youth. They now exist on various streaming platforms, and they held up to the test of time, so I figured I'd check out some choice episodes. I haven't watched everything from this list yet, but what I have watched has been good and inspires me to check out more of these series in the future.

  • Captain America: Civil War

I have been anticipating this movie for a while. In the shadow of Deadpool and Batman V Superman, Civil War looks to be a standout comic book movie that handles a lot of characters as well as important themes well, a unique spot that sets it apart from these two movies. Deadpool was great because it was a smaller scale movie, and BvS had a lot of its own problems to deal with, so it read this post if you want to go there. Anyway, Civil War has been getting awesome early reviews, and I'll be sure to share my full thoughts about it after I see it this weekend with my brother to help celebrate his birthday. #TeamCap

  • Moving!

I am moving down to Maryland this weekend for my new job, which I am very excited about! I'll be getting my first apartment, living with my partner, building our life together, and all of this is taking place while I start a new job at an awesome new company and live in a cool area neighboring two great cities. I'm looking forward to getting settled in and exploring my community. I know it is going to be a bit stressful getting to that point, but I know it will be worth it. I'm hoping this move and period of newness won't interrupt the regularly scheduled programming here on the blog and elsewhere. I'm going to do my best to plan ahead and have stuff scheduled to go out ahead of time. Wish me and my partner luck as we make this big move!

Weekly Geek Outs - 04/15/16

April 15, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what is going on in my world this week:

  • Doctor Strange

We were treated to our first look at the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe this week with the teaser trailer for Doctor Strange. While there has been some backlash for whitewashing The Ancient One (perhaps ignoring that they're having a gender nonconforming woman in the role), I nevertheless thought this initial glimpse was great. They're also changing Baron Mordo to be played by an black actor, which is great to add more diversity to what is a somewhat lackluster roster of MCU heroes and villains when it comes to diversity. This movie just looks like a trippy, wild, fun ride that is like Inception with magic and superheroes. I'm in!

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Another great teaser trailer we got this week was for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (how are we going to abbreviate this movie title? FBWTFM?). Exploring more of the deep Harry Potter universe, this movie will take place in 1920s America, which will be a refreshing take and will provide so many opportunities to flesh out this world. I'm really looking forward to this movie, and while we don't get much in this trailer, anything taking place in this world already has my interest piqued.

  • Fear the Walking Dead

After the disappointing season six finale of The Walking Dead, this past Sunday we were treated to the premiere of season two of Fear the Walking Dead. This show's initial six episode season one was pretty slow moving (I know I saw someone joking that pretty much the entire season was summed up in a quick "Previously On..." which goes to show how little happened) and this first episode was no different. The jokes about this show being a zombie sort of write themselves. Both of these shows are starting to lose me with their inconsistency and lack of character exploration or anything that gets me really invested in the show. Also, FTWD struggles to me with their chemistry between the characters, which makes it hard to watch or get connected to the show. I think I'll give FTWD a few more episodes to win me over, but if not, I don't think I'll waste my time anymore.

Weekly Geek Outs - 04/08/16

April 08, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs

Greetings!

Here's what is all the geeky stuff going on in my world this week:

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This movie finally came out on Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital HD this week, bringing along some new special features alongside the much beloved film. I was really excited to dig in with the behind the scenes stuff for this movie to get some more background and context to the the story and production. I have to say I was a little disappointed by what I found. There is certainly a breadth of different special features, but the depth isn't there. I found myself sort of bored with them, and I watched most of them all in one sitting. The deleted scenes were the worst part. They were all irrelevant fluff and only added up to a few minutes of footage. I'm sure they are going to repackage this movie several times in the future (in addition to all the current versions for different retailers) and have a trilogy box set with Episodes 8 and 9 when they come out that has more special features. I'm happy to finally own the film, I just wish there was more stuff with it.

  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The first teaser trailer for this upcoming addition to the Star Wars universe dropped yesterday morning. To put it simply, I am so excited for this! It is a unique exploration of this rich universe for the first time as a movie. We've had plenty of video games, comics, and books that expand the Star Wars universe, but this is the first "anthology" film we'll be getting, and it looks like it will not disappoint. Dare I say that it could be even better than Force Awakens?

  • The Walking Dead

This past Sunday was the season 6 finale of TWD. I did not like it. I think the cliffhanger was cheap even though there are some that are clinging to it as masterful storytelling. The entire finale episode was a build up to a moment that itself dragged on and then did not pay off (it won't for another seven months). This show has had high highs and low lows. It is either really unique, fun, brutal, emotional television, or a super boring drag with no end in sight. After the finale, I contemplated giving up on this show, as I have with other shows in the past (for example: New Girl, Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, Game of Thrones, Heroes Reborn). I think the break will help me get some distance and reevaluate if I want to keep committing time to the show. Maybe Fear the Walking Dead will reinvigorate me with this zombie universe.

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 01/22/16

January 22, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Weekly Geek Outs, Nerdy Stuff

Greetings!

Here's what is going on in my world this week:

  • Agent Carter

Some of my favorite shows are coming back this week, which makes me very happy. One of them is the limited series Agent Carter, which like last year, is covering the mid-season break of Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 premiered with a two-hour event on Tuesday, and I'm excited to continue to explore the story of Peggy Carter. These first two episodes (out of a total of 10 this season) were great and I'm looking forward to where the rest of the season goes. They have done her very well in the past, and she is a hallmark character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so I'm optimistic that they'll continue this trend. There is so much of her story to tell too, since we know she has a big role to play the in the creation of SHIELD, and based on the beginning of Ant-Man, is still influential up until at least the late 1980s. So that means we still have over 40 years of story to cover for Peggy, and I hope we at least get to glance at some of that at some point in some form or another. I'd be totally down for some deep, Cold War Agent Carter action!

  • The Dark Knight Returns

I checked out this two part animated movie on HBO Now the other day in anticipation of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which takes some inspiration from this story. I had some cursory understanding of what this pivotal comic book was about, but I never read it so I was really excited to delve into the story deeper. The setting is a dystopic 1980s America, where a older, grizzled Batman comes out of hiding to free Gotham from the grips of a new wave of criminals. There are a bunch of nods to the rest of the DC Universe's fate in this timeline, which is cool, and I overall enjoyed everything about this. The action is good, the animation is solid, and the performances are good too. It's a unique interpretation of classic characters and settings, but I liked it's take on everything. These alternate universe stories always intrigue me since they allow for very fresh interpretations of well known tropes, and at times have no responsibility to be accountable to what came before or what comes after. Seeing this also has me even more excited for what Dawn of Justice will entail, and we're only like two months away now!

  • Legends of Tomorrow

This brand new series just premiered last night and sets up a tantalizing premise of what boils down to Doctor Who with superheroes. The first episode has me excited for what is to come, and the time travel inherent to the show will allow for some cool DC Universe nods, like Jonah Hex. It will exist outside and alongside it's sibling shows of Arrow and Flash, since, again, with the time travel ability, the characters can come right back to where they left their timelines (a clever trick) which I'll be intrigued to see how that exactly works in practice versus in theory. For the next couple of months, we'll be spoiled with new weekly episodes of Flash, Arrow, and LoT, further bolstering their already robust shared DC TV Universe. As much as I enjoy Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD, DC has them beat here.

Energizing Through Different Entertainment Mediums

January 20, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Nerdy Stuff

I've been thinking lately about how I consume entertainment. I'm mostly a visual person; enjoying movies, television shows, and the occasional comic book. Next is probably audio, since I have a fair amount of podcasts I listen to on a normal basis. Last is the written word (ironic since I write myself pretty regularly). I'm not a huge reader but I try to keep up with at least a book a month. In a sort of transcendent additional category is video games, since a lot of the entertainment comes from participating in the narrative. I've been a lifelong gamer, but have fallen off on that too as of late. I'm hoping to get back into it soon, but all of this thinking got me exploring the benefits of diversifying our entertainment medium consumption. Especially in the era of on-demand everything, we can explore all sorts of new ideas and stories while engaging different parts of ourselves in the process.

What I like about movies and TV is how everything comes together to create a beautiful piece of art. The visuals, the music, and the story all coalesce to make for an engrossing entertainment experience, especially when you go to a theater for a big, fun movie. I like to get to the theater pretty regularly. Even with the absurd prices, it still feels worth it for the big screen, surround sound, and perhaps enhanced visuals. I tend to go especially when the movie is built for some good enhanced visuals from 3D or IMAX. Something else that is great about the theater is the communal experience of seeing a film with a room full of people. I'm not much for concerts, so this is the closest I'll probably regularly get to enjoying some entertainment live with other people. While it can also be a burden, for a big comic book movie or something with a passionate fan base, the community experience is awesome!

What I like about podcasts is how you can focus entirely on the spoken word. In its simplicity, it can be immensely powerful to hear someone speak their own words. Also, I often listen to podcasts alone or with headphones so the experience is very intimate almost, which creates a very personal connection between me and my podcasts. I listen to informative, funny, and emotional podcasts. The medium is one of the most unique and diverse forms of entertainment, with thousands (if not tens of thousands) of shows telling different stories and providing a platform for people to speak to their niche communities.

What I like about books is the nuanced exploration of a single topic. While podcasts or movies can do much of the same, I'm not going to sit with either for as long as I would with a good book. Plus, there is something uniquely cool about the analog quality of an actual book. I tend to purchase a hard copy of books I especially like just so I can have it in my hands and on the shelf. Otherwise, I am all digital since it helps to keep all of my books portable on my iPad. I've also gone all digital with comic books lately, since it helps with the problem of being able to read them whenever and wherever while also helping me travel light. I honestly think I'll start reading comic books more than regular books since I have been feeling an itch to explore some different stuff, like the Marvel Civil War story line in anticipation of the new movie (which I just finished, and it was excellent!) and the new Star Wars comics. Also, the way a good frame can capture emotion or action with an artistic, illustrated visual style is unparalleled.

As much as I enjoy any single medium at a given time, it has been enlightening to explore stories through all sorts of different platforms. The beauty of the time we live in now is that all of these mediums are easily available to us. We can embrace the diversity of stories, mediums, and people behind them, which I think can make a hugely positive impact for the world.

I look forward to indulging in all of them so that I can share some good stories with the people I care about.

Movie Review Monday: Two Night Stand

January 18, 2016 by Dustin Ramsdell in Movie Reviews

Welcome to another edition of Movie Review Monday!

This week's film is the 2014 romantic comedy Two Night Stand, starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton.

The plot follows Megan (Tipton) and Alec (Teller) as they get snowed in after a one night stand and have to spend far more time together than they originally thought. It's certainly a fun premise and while the film has some bright spots, it is ultimately a disappointing and inconsistent movie.

Trying a bit hard to be a new kind of romantic comedy for modern times, where Two Night Stand mostly fails is some very odd character choices throughout the movie which makes it all not very relatable. It feels like there was potential here sprouting out of the premise, but it falls apart by the end. I liked the two main characters, which is important since we spend most of the movie with them. The few supporting roles are decently done, but making a simple, realistic, relatable movie fell just out of reach with the absurd hurdles Megan and Alec have to overcome as they get to know each other. I also would have preferred if the whole movie was just the two days they had to spend together. Stretching it past that time didn't help the movie either.

I tend to be pretty critical of romantic comedies (the few that I do see) since they all seem to be so formulaic and generic. This film had potential but it squandered it. Real romance and love is not as simple or as complex and dramatic as movies tend to make it. I haven't seen a lot of instances of the true nature of relationships being done well on screen, but perhaps it wouldn't be as compelling if it were. There always has to be conflict to drive a plot.

Nevertheless, you can check out Two Night Stand for yourself if you'd like to form your own opinion. I had seen some promotion for it randomly and since I have a trial of HBO Now right now, I was able to check it out on there since I intrigued by the premise.

Thanks for stopping by!
